Does disturbance determines the prevalence of dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium, Santalales: Viscaceae) in Central Mexico? RChHN
QUEIJEIRO-BOLAÑOS,MÓNICA E; CANO-SANTANA,ZENÓN; CASTELLANOS-VARGAS,IVÁN.
Large vegetation disturbance rates have been reported in the "Zoquiapan y Anexas" Protected Natural Area in Central Mexico. Arceuthobium globosum and A. vaginatum coexist within this area and have a deleterious impact on Pinus hartwegii. This study seeks to understand the relationship between this disturbance and the two dwarf mistletoe species prevalent in this zone. Twenty-four plots measuring 60 x55 m containing P. hartwegii trees were selected. Within these plots, the physical features of the land, the density of host and non-host trees, the prevalence of each mistletoe species, and six disturbance indicators were recorded. We found that A. vaginatum infests up to 47 % of P hartwegii trees and that its prevalence is affected positively by the slope,...

Genetic diversity in two variants of Orobanche gracilis Sm. [var. gracilis and var. deludens (Beck) A. Pujadas] (Orobanchaceae) from different regions of Spain Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Román,Belén; Hernández,Rosabell; Pujadas-Salvá,Antonio José; Cubero,José Ignacio; Rubiales,Diego; Satovic,Zlatko.
The pattern of genetic variation among populations of two Orobanche gracilis Sm. taxa (var. gracilis and var. deludens (Beck) A. Pujadas) from Northern and Southern Spain growing on different hosts was analysed using RAPD markers. The diversity analysis within populations revealed a higher level of diversity in the populations from the North when compared to the Southern ones. The results of principal co-ordinate analysis (PCoA) based on Dice distances among samples clearly established the separation of samples according to the taxonomical variety and the geographical origin of each population. The Southern populations of both var. gracilis and var. deludens were more differentiated among them than those of var. gracilis from the North. The analysis of...

Susceptibility of Brazilian varieties of maize and upland rice to Striga (Striga asiatica). Infoteca-e
MIRANDA, C. H. B.; FAVARO, S. P..
This communication registers authors' impressions on the parasitism of Striga (Striga asiatica (L.) Kuntze) in Brazilian varieties of maize and dryland rice that were introduced in Mozambique. It was a rare opportunity to learn about this plant parasite in its native habitat, as it does not naturally occur in Brazil, although ecological conditions are favorable for its development. It is an important quarantine plant rigorously checked out of the country, because of the risks it poses to extensive Brazilian pasturelands and cereal cropland. We hope this report calls the due attention and helps to build up knowledge on the subject.

Two mistletoes are too many?: Interspecific occurrence of mistletoes on the same host tree Acta Botanica
Arruda,Rafael; Lunardelli,Caroline; Kitagawa,Clóvis; Caires,Claudenir Simões; Teodoro,Grazielle Sales; Mourão,Fabiana Alves.
Mistletoe can have a major impact on the fitness of the host plant. If there is more than one species of mistletoe on the same host tree, the overall impact might be amplified. We report the occurrence of more than one species of mistletoe on the same host tree. Although it is not a rule in the field, to our knowledge, there have been no studies of this topic. In most cases, two species of mistletoe were recorded on the same host tree, although we recorded three species of mistletoe on one occasion. This demonstrates that different species of mistletoe can be compatible with the same host species. Therefore, compatibility (structural and physiological) might be an important factor for the occurrence of mistletoe. Recent studies have shown that if the...
